Year 3 Spring 2021 Newsletter

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to the Summer term!

For your information, we have put together a short summary of what your child will be learning during this term.

Subject

Summer Term

 

English

Text: We will be reading The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan, Pebble in my Pocket by Meredith Hooper, The Iron Man by Ted Hughes, The Wild Robot by Peter Brown and we will also read a range of poetry.

Reading; We will work on identifying narrative structures in chapter books. Explain the theme of a narrative text, explain the typical characteristics of different genres. We will also draw inferences about characters’ feelings and thoughts independently.

In poetry we will learn to identify 3 different types of poem, including narrative. We will also learn poems and recite them audibly with actions.

Writing: We will draft and write narratives, progressively building a varied and rich vocabulary to create interest for our readers. Children will organise their writing in paragraphs around a theme and increase the range of sentence structures in their written work.

Maths

Angles and shapes: Children will begin to clarify what a fraction is and experience then as both as a measure and as property of shapes.

Measures: Children will read weighing scales to measure mass in grams and kilograms to the nearest interval on the scale.

Securing multiplication and division facts: Children will make connections between different representations of multiplication and division recognising that the same calculation can represent different situations.

Calculation strategies and place value: In this unit the children will explore different strategies for the same calculation, reasoning about which one the find the most efficient based on the numbers they are working with.

Science

Plants: The children will Compare the requirements of different plants and link these to particular habitats and explain what all plants need to flourish and recognise how these requirements vary in amount.

Forces and magnets:  The children will explore whether some magnets are stronger than others. Describe how magnets attract or repel each other, and attract magnetic materials.

RE

In RE the children will explore the following questions

What can we learn about special symbols and signs used in religion?

 

What do Sikh sayings and Sikh Symbols tell us about Sikh beliefs?

PSHE

Stereotypes: Children will learn what a stereotype is. They will earn how stereotypes can be unfair, negative or destructive.  They will also explore the importance of respecting others, even when they are very different from them (for example, physically, in character, personality or backgrounds), or make different choices or have different preferences or beliefs. 

What I like: Children will develop their understanding of recognising and talking about their emotions, including having a varied vocabulary of words to use when talking about their own and others’ feelings. The will also learn how to ask for advice or help for themselves or others, and to keep trying until they are heard.

The children will learn a range of French vocabulary related to the following topics.

Let it Flow (Summer 1)

In Geography the children will learn about the rivers and mountains of the United Kingdom.

In History the children will learn about the Importance of The River Nile to the ancient Egyptians.

Land’s End to John O’Groats (Summer 2)

In Geography the children will complete a regional study of the Lake District Research. They will identify the main land uses. Compare this region with London and examine the land use changes over time in both regions. 

We will send homework weekly. We will send out homework on Fridays. Please support your children to complete the homework. Due to Covid-19 and the possibility of transfer of the virus, we do not require the homework back. The children will have a spelling test the following Friday after the homework has been set.

Children will bring home reading books weekly, please ensure your child reads daily and talk to them about they have read and ask lots of questions about the text.

PE will be on the following days:

Topaz Class- Tuesday and Thursday

Turquoise Class- Thursday and Friday

Please ensure you child comes to school in their PE kit.
